KEY POINTS

  • The petition is set to become one of the most signed petitions on Change.org
  • The petition was first launched in 2020 by a Denver restaurant owner
  • Congress has yet to indicate plans to send out more stimulus payments

A petition urging lawmakers in Congress to send recurring stimulus checks to Americans is now just 19,000 signatures away from hitting its goal.

In 2020, Denver restaurant owner Stephanie Bonin launched a petition on Change.org calling on the Biden administration to send $2,000 monthly payments to American adults and $1,000 to children.

“I’m calling on Congress to support families with a $2,000 payment for adults and a $1,000 payment for kids immediately, and continuing regular checks for the duration of the crisis,” Bonin wrote in the petition. “Otherwise, laid-off workers, furloughed workers, the self-employed, and workers dealing with reduced hours will struggle to pay their rent or put food on the table.”

As of Monday 7:08 p.m. ET, the petition was 19,318 signatures short of achieving its goal of three million signatories. The petition is set to become one of the platform’s most signed petitions.

Despite the growing calls for a fourth round of stimulus checks, neither the Biden administration nor lawmakers in Congress have indicated plans to pass legislation that would send out more payments to Americans.

However, several states have since launched stimulus programs that sent one-time payments to their residents. In Arizona, residents who landed a full-time job would receive a one-time payment of $2,000, while people who landed part-time positions would receive $1,000.

“In Arizona, we’re going to use federal money to encourage people to work…instead of paying people not to work,” Gov. Doug Ducey, R-AZ, said in an announcement, as quoted by KOLD 13.

The same effort is being undertaken by Gov. Andy Beshear, D-KY, who introduced a bill that would send $1,500 checks to up to 15,000 residents if they returned to work.

Gov. Janet Mills, D-ME, also offered employees a $1,500 payment if they start jobs between June 15 and June 30, and a $1,000 check for people who return to work in July.

In California, residents have received stimulus checks ranging from $600 to $1,100 over the past months as part of the Golden State Stimulus program. More payments could also come in 2022 as the state is on track to have at least a $31 billion surplus in its next budget year.
