Fox News Criticized For '3 Mexican Countries' Banner on Twitter By AOC, Others
Fox News has generated plenty of controversy in the past, whether it was recent anti-Muslim comments by hosts like Jeanine Pirro or its history of sexual harassment allegations by high-level employees.
Over the weekend, the network found itself backtracking on a highly dubious banner.
During the Sunday edition of "Fox & Friends Weekend," a graphic read "Trump Cuts Aid to 3 Mexican Countries." The graphic stayed live for about 30 seconds.
The banner was about a report that the U.S. government would be cutting foreign aid to three Central American nations: El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. Trump's call for cuts also comes on the heels of his threat to close the border.
The mistake was almost immediately called out by @BadFoxGraphics, a Twitter account dedicated to calling out Fox News for mistakes or racially insensitive statements.
The error was later addressed by co-host Ed Henry.
"We had an inaccurate graphic on screen while talking about this very story. We just want to be clear, the funding is being cut off to the three Central American countries. We apologize for the error," Henry said.
It didn’t take long for social media to slam Fox News.
Adam Serwer, a writer for "The Atlantic," posted on Twitter: "this is less an error than an expression of Fox News' underlying sentiment towards most Latinos."
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, an outspoken critic of Trump and Fox News, also fired back at Fox News.
"Just a reminder that these are the same folks who assert their superiority by belittling the intelligence and good faith of others," she posted on Twitter.
"Fox & Friends Weekend" co-host Jedediah Bila took to Twitter to point out that it was merely a mistake.
"It was a chyron error, which Ed corrected and apologized for on air. Maybe listen to what Pete actually said while the chyron error was up? Of course I realize this is all click-bait nonsense, but come on already," the tweet read.
