Hoping to avoid shipping fees on Christmas gifts this year? Then get ready to shop big this week as major retailers mark Free Shipping Day with free shipping deals with no minimum purchase required and guaranteed delivery by Christmas Eve.

More than 840 retailers and brands are participating in Free Shipping Day on Friday, including Walmart, Target, Express, Saks Fifth Avenue and Samsung. Free Shipping Day was launched in 2007 by Luke Knowles and his wife, who own the year-round free informational site FreeShipping.org. "Knowles understood last-minute purchases are as much a part of the holiday season as eggnog and poinsettias. Yet since the advent of online shopping, consumers have seen Dec. 11 as the final day to order gifts or risk having them come after Christmas Day," the site claims. "The Free Shipping Day program shifted this paradigm with a simple concept: Give consumers what they want in a timely, convenient and affordable fashion. In the digital arena, this means free shipping with a guaranteed arrival date."

When and how to ship Christmas presents can be a problem each holiday season because different retailers have different final shipping dates. For Macys.com, the deadline is 5 p.m. Dec. 22 to get delivery via standard shipping in the continental United States by Christmas. At Amazon.com, Wednesday is the last day for free shipping for non-Prime members who order $35 or more on eligible items for the item to arrive by Dec. 24.

Holiday shoppers plan to spend roughly $463 on family members this year, up from $458 in 2014, according to the National Retail Federation. Almost half of all purchases will be made online.
