KEY POINTS
- The cast of “Friends” are finally filming the reunion special next week, a report says
- The six core cast members reportedly are going to reminisce and discuss the show’s popularity
- HBO Max declined to comment on the leaked information about the special
More than a year after it was announced, the “Friends” reunion special is finally moving forward as filming for the project is set to commence next week, a report says.
Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer are reuniting in the week of April 5 to film the special on the Warner Bros. lot, unnamed sources with knowledge of the project told The Hollywood Reporter Friday.
It’s still not clear if the special is bringing back Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, Joey and Ross and show fans what they’ve been up to since the series wrapped up in 2004. THR reported that the cast is very likely to just gather on Warner Bros.’ Stage 24 to reminisce the time they spent working on the series and discuss the show’s unwavering popularity through the years.
Apart from the six core members of the cast, the reunion special is also expected to feature show creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane. Kauffman and Crane’s co-executive producer is also involved in the project as one of the execs alongside the six lead stars, the report said.
Ben Winston, who produced the 2021 Grammys and serves as the executive producer of “The Late Late Show With James Corden,” will be sitting on the director’s chair for the highly anticipated reunion special of the show that ran for a decade from 1994 to 2004 on NBC.
HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s streaming service that will be the new home of the “Friends” series, was asked to confirm the leaked information on the special’s filming next week, but it declined to comment on the report.
The reunion was announced early last year, and it was supposed to film in March 2020 but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Production was delayed multiple times as more and more cases were reported, preventing studios from gathering multiple people to shoot movies and shows. However, Perry announced on Twitter in November that filming for the special was finally set for March 2021.
However, Perry’s announcement did not come true. To appease fans, Schwimmer gave an update last month in an interview with SiriusXM host Andy Cohen that the TV special will finally start filming “in a little over a month.” Schwimmer even shared that they found a way to film the project safely and in accordance with the safety protocols imposed amid the public health crisis.
