Frozen Pizza Recall 2013: Full List Of Rich Product Corp. Foods Recalled For E. Coli Outbreak

Bad news for frozen food lovers.

Rich Product Corp. of Buffalo, N.Y., has recalled more than 10.5 million pounds of its frozen pizzas, mozzarella bites, quesadillas and other snack items over concern that the products may be contaminated with E. coli, the Food Safety and Inspection Service said in a statement.

A sample of the company’s Farm Rich frozen chicken mini quesadilla was found in a sick person’s home and tested positive for E. coli O121. So far, the bacteria associated with the recall has affected 24 people in 15 states.

Rich Product Corp. issued the voluntary recall on March 28 and expanded its efforts to include some heat-treated, not fully frozen meals like mini quesadillas, Philly cheese steaks and sandwiches.

“When it became apparent to us that … identification of a specific cause was not going to be a simple or short process, we decided to act proactively to expand the recall,” Bill Gisel, Rich’s president and chief executive officer, said in a company statement.

More than 30 products have been recalled with “best by” dates ranging from Jan. 1, 2013, to Sept. 29, 2014.

Symptoms for E. coli 0121 can be dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps that can last for two to eight days.

While most people can recover from E. coli within a week, some may develop hemolytic uremic syndrome -- a kind of kidney failure that affects children under the age of 5 and the elderly, FSIS says.
