‘Fun-Loving’ Woman Takes Ecstasy Tablets At Music Festival, Dies Of Organ Failure
KEY POINTS
- Kelsey Corps, 20, died from multiple organ failure and ecstasy poisoning
- She took two or three tablets containing ecstasy at a music festival before her death
- There was no information suggesting that she was coerced into taking the pills
A 20-year-old British woman died more than half a year ago after she took several drug pills at a music festival, an inquest was told.
Kelsey Corps collapsed due to organ failure from taking two or three tablets containing MDMA — more commonly known as ecstasy — at around 7:30 p.m. on July 24 last year, the Manchester Evening News reported.
The fitness center receptionist from Lancaster was attending Wonderwood Festival at Preston's Valiants Showground at the time with her friends, an inquest in Preston heard.
Corps, who drank gin or vodka before collapsing, was put on a wheelchair after people were unable to give her water, Bradley Graham, one of Corps' friends, said.
She was later taken to the emergency department of Blackpool Victoria Hospital shortly past 8:50 p.m. in a coma.
Dr. Simon Vaughan, who worked in the intensive care unit at the hospital, said that Corps had a fast heart rate, low blood pressure and a temperature of 42 degrees Celsius (107.6 degrees Fahrenheit).
She also tested positive for COVID-19, so she was transferred to a critical unit, Vaughan added.
Corps was expected to "survive with supportive management," but her condition "started to deteriorate very seriously," according to the doctor.
"[B]y 1:25 a.m., her condition was so severe [that] her red blood cells were deteriorating — [a] recognized but unexpected reaction" from ecstasy ingestion, Vaughan explained.
Corps further deteriorated until she went into cardiac arrest at around 5 a.m. on July 25 due to low blood oxygen levels. Attempts to resuscitate her lasted 40 minutes, but she died at around 6:15 a.m.
High levels of MDMA were found inside Corps' system, a postmortem examination showed. Her cause of death was determined to be multiple organ failure and ecstasy poisoning.
There was no information suggesting that Corps had been coerced into taking the pills.
Corps, who was described by her family as "fun-loving" and "sociable," had reportedly taken ecstasy before and "knew her limit."
She allegedly used "recreation drugs" at parties but "did not use other drugs," according to Graham.
Police visited the address where Corps bought the pills from, according to Det. Con. Rachel Crossley of the Lancashire Police. However, no further action was taken due to "insufficient evidence," police said.
More tablets were allegedly found at Wonderwood Festival.
Attendees were physically searched upon entering and there were drug sniffer dogs at the event, according to the music festival's organizers.
Additionally, an amnesty box was present, which had a bag of unidentified powder and another that contained MDMA and caffeine. The two bags and another unidentified bag were all surrendered voluntarily.
