Father’s Day became a trending topic on Twitter on Sunday, with social media users sending well wishes to the dads and father figures in their lives. While people shared plenty of sentimental posts, there were many hilarious tweets to celebrate the day and the men they admire.
Check out some of the funniest Father’s Day posts shared by people on social media.
“I called my dad to say Happy Father’s Day and he said, ‘That’s terrific. Hey, put the dog back on the phone. I got another joke for him,’” one post read.
Meanwhile, one Twitter post suggested people should celebrate their own fathers first before worrying about celebrity dads. “Y’all out here wishing Harry Styles a happy Father’s Day before y’all wish your actual dads, glad to see that y’all have your priorities in check,” it read.
Over the years, Father’s Day has become a time dedicated to honoring dads and father figures whether they are still in a person’s life or have passed away. The holiday recognizes the positive impact the person had on an individual’s life and how it shaped them into the person they are.
The idea of the holiday came about in 1910 by a woman named Sonora Dodd, who was raised by her father after her mother died in childbirth.
Dodd was listening to a church service on Mother’s Day when she began reflecting on all of the great things her father did for her. Dodd held the first Father’s Day celebration in June at her home in Spokane, Washington.
Years later, in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared that it would be celebrated on the third Sunday in June. However, Father’s Day didn’t become a national holiday until 1972, when President Richard Nixon made it official.
