Galaxy S8 Plus Specs: Price For Samsung Display Repair Highest Ever

The Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus display will be extremely expensive to repair through official channels, according to the Polish blog, Android.com.pl. The publication claims customers seeking repair on a Galaxy S8 Plus with a broken display will have to pay €250, or about $271 at an authorized Samsung service center.

Repairs to the Galaxy S8 Plus are 25 percent more costly than they were for the Galaxy S7 Edge when it launched in spring 2016, according to GSMArena. This is the most costly repair estimate to date for a Samsung flagship device.

With a 6.2-inch Quad HD dual-edge curved infinity display, the Galaxy S8 Plus has one of the most unique displays ever featured on a Samsung device. A sleek, all-glass design, thin bezels, and a virtual home button allows the device to have dimensions of 159.5 x 73.4 x 8.1 mm. The device is just slightly larger than the Galaxy Note 7, which features a 5.7-inch dual-edge curved display.

Even with its aesthetically pleasing features, several experts have determined the Galaxy S8 Plus is also the most fragile smartphone on the market. The teardown team iFixit rated the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus with a repairability score of four out of 10, indicating that an owner’s best option is to avoid attempting to fix broken handsets on their own. The team recommends Galaxy S8 owners take broken handsets to a service center.

SquareTrade gave the Galaxy S8 Plus a breakability score of 77 out of 100, detailing that the all-glass frame leaves the handset vulnerable to breaks, cracks and shattering from all angles and makes a protective case a necessity. While Samsung markets the Galaxy S8 as a “device without limits,” SquareTrade says the only limit for the smartphone is sidewalks.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus owners also have the option of purchasing an extended warranty or insurance for their handset. Many programs are between $7 and $12 monthly through the life of the phone and allow users to file between two and three claims per year for repair or replacement of handsets.

However, costs can also quickly pile up. In addition to the monthly fee, device replacements often come with deductible fees, which range from between $50 and $200. Often more premium devices, such as the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus will have higher deductibles. An upside is many extended warranty programs offer 24-hour customer service and same-day or next day repair turnaround.

In addition to its unique display, the Galaxy S8 Plus features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip or Exynos 9985 chip, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, a 12-megapixel rear camera and 8-megapixel front camera and a 3,500mAh battery. The Galaxy S8 features a 5.8-inch display and a 3,000mAh battery. Both models run Android Nougat and have been on the market since April 21.
