“Game of Thrones” has become infamous for leaving fans at the edge of their seats. Whether it’s a shocking death, a gruesome battle or a cliffhanger ending, the HBO original series always leaves fans wanting more.
Season 6 was especially thrilling for “Game of Thrones” fans. The show picked up after the death of Jon Snow (Kit Harington), one of the show’s most central heroes. In an unexpected but welcome turn of events, the Red Woman (Carice von Houten) was able to bring him back to life, putting the show’s narrative back on track.
From there, “Game of Thrones” Season 6 only got more shocking. Within a few episodes, Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) and his army took over Winterfell, Jon and Sansa were reunited, Rickon Stark (Art Parkinson) was captured, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) decided to head for Westeros with the Greyjoys, and the Night King (Vladimir Furdik) and his army of waights moved toward the Seven Kingdoms. In the end, Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) rose from enslavement to become the ruler of the Seven Kindoms, which has set the tone for Season 7 of “Game of Thrones.
Thronies are anxious to learn how “Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will top Season 6, especially after learning that Season 7 will be shorter. A trailer, released in March, provided little insight into what’s to come when the show returns in July. HBO followed the trailer release with photos that left “Game of Thrones” fans buzzing about the possibilities.
One photo in particular — of Gilly (Hannah Murray) and Sam (John Bradley-West) reading in the Citadel library — had people talking. The picture sparked theories about what the Wilding woman is reading. One “Game of Thrones” fan with a keen eye was able to read the page she’s staring at, sharing it with others on Reddit.
“It is also written that there are annals in Asshai of such a darkness, and of a hero who fought against it with a red sword. His deeds are said to have been performed before the rise of Valyria, in the earliest age when Old Ghis was first forming its empire. This legend has spread west from Asshai, and the followers of R’hollor claim that this hero was names Azor Ahai, and prophesy his return. In the Jade Compendium, Colloquo Votar recounts a curious legend from Yi Ti, which states that the sun hid its face from the earth for a lifetime, ashamed at something none could discover, and that disaster was averted only by the deeds of a woman with a monkey’s tail,” the passage reads.
The passage reportedly has to do with the Azor Ahai prophecy, a complex aspect in the “Game of Thrones” universe. The theory promises a fierce and unstoppable hero who is reborn to save the Seven Kingdoms from the Lord of Light’s enemies. It’s not clear who those foes are, but it’s possible it’s the Night King and the White Walkers.
Before we take a deep dive into what’s to come, let’s revisit what’s happened. Check out the gallery above for some of the most iconic scenes from Season 6 of “Game of Thrones.”
