‘Game Of Thrones’ Showrunners David Benioff, D.B. Weiss Team Up Once Again For New Drama ‘Confederate’
“Game of Thrones” is airing its last season, but this is not the last project for its showrunners, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
The Benioff and Weiss tandem was effective in bringing George RR Martin’s bestselling series to life on the small screen. But although “Game of Thrones” is already on its last run, its showrunners will not be parting ways anytime soon because they are set to team up once again for HBO’s new alt-history original drama series, “Confederate,” Deadline reported.

“As the brilliant ‘Game Of Thrones’ winds down to its final season, we are thrilled to be able to continue our relationship with Dan and David, knowing that any subject they take on will result in a unique and ambitious series,” HBO programming president Casey Bloys said in a statement. “Their intelligent, wry and visually stunning approach to storytelling has a way of engaging an audience and taking them on an unforgettable journey. ‘Confederate’ promises to be no exception, and we are honored to be adding the talented team of Nichelle and Malcolm Spellman to the mix.”
Weiss added that they have been discussing the idea of “Confederate” for years. Initially, they were considering the idea of making it a film. However, given HBO’s excellence in storytelling canvas, the team opted to write it as an original TV series on the network.
Benioff and Weiss will be partnering with Bernadette Caulfield and Carolyn Strauss, who serve as executive producers. Meanwhile, “The Good Wife” scribe Nichelle Tramble Spellman and “Empire’s” Malcolm Spellman are set to write the script for the upcoming drama.
“Confederate” will chronicle the events leading to the third World War. In the show, slavery is legal and even evolves into a modern institution. Viewers can expect to see broad characters from the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone that includes freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, journalists and more.
In other news, Ed Sheeran appeared on the premiere episode of “Game of Thrones” Season 7. However, some critics were not impressed with the “Shape of You” singer’s cameo. In fact, on Monday, Sheeran shut down his Twitter due to the backlash he received from viewers. After a few hours, the “Thinking Out Loud” singer returned to the social media site, but limited his activity. His tweets from 2015 were all removed and his 19 million followers were reduced to less than 2,000.
