As the world continues its battle to stop the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus, “League of Legends” ace player Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok has committed on donating 30 million Korean Won to the Community Chest of his home country Korea.
The amount, which roughly translated to around $25,000 will be put to good use as South Korea is doing its best to prevent the outbreak from reaching a global scale.
“I felt devastated for those that are working day and night to battle COVID-19. I really wanted to aid those battling the outbreak and felt that donating to the Community Chest of Korea was the optimal choice,” said The Super Times, citing a statement coming from the LoL mid-laner.
As an added help to Sang-hyeok, his team, SK Telecom 1, will donate all of their streaming proceeds this week to various charities who are also on the front line in the fight against COVID-19.
The rise of COVID-19 cases in Korea saw the country's leading “League of Legends” competition, the LoL Champions Korea (LCK), without any audience since February 5. This was followed by the closure of its media room on the 25th.
The LCK also suspended “all activities at the end of the first round robin” on March 6.
The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told the Associated Press that 131 new cases of COVID-19 were reported Monday, bringing the total to 7,513.
54 persons have already died due to the flu-like disease, it added.
