'Gangnam Style' Singer Psy To Drop His First Album In Almost 5 Years
K-pop superstar Psy is making his comeback to the music scene at the end of April after nearly five years, and he's marking it with the release of new music.
The 44-year-old singer is set to drop his ninth studio album, titled "Psy9th," on April 29, just in time for the 10th anniversary of his hit song "Gangnam Style." Record label P Nation, which Psy founded in 2019, made the announcement by posting a short clip on Instagram on Tuesday.
In the video, which was apparently recorded during a show in 2013, the record-breaking performer can be seen addressing the concertgoers, saying, "I know a lot of you have high expectations for my next hit song. To be honest, I produced 'Champion' in 2002 and it took me exactly 10 years to produce a song that is more sensational than 'Champion' with the release of 'Gangnam Style' in 2012."
"I guess what I'm trying to say is, perhaps the next time you meet a song like 'Gangnam Style' will be in 2022," he added.
The upcoming album will be Psy's first musical project since the May 2017 release of his eighth album, "4×2=8," which featured the songs "I Luv It" and "New Face."
"Gangnam Style" made Psy the first K-pop act to spend seven weeks at No. 2 on Billboard's Hot 100 main singles chart in 2012. It was also the first viral K-pop song that saw global success, thanks to its iconic horse-riding dance move that spawned countless dance covers online.
As for the song's music video, it exceeded YouTube's maximum number of views when it surpassed 2 billion views. This eventually prompted the platform to upgrade its view counter. Currently, it has 4.38 billion views.
Psy, born Park Jae-sang, debuted in 2001. He is considered one of South Korea's most successful musical artists.
Besides "Gangnam Style," his 2013 single "Gentleman" was also a huge success, even placing No. 5 on Billboard's Hot 100. His other hit songs include "Bird," "Champion," "Hangover," "What Would Have Been" and "Right Now."
