Gearbox announced its newest expansion for “Borderlands 3” at PAX East on Friday that looks to draw heavily on the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
The new expansion, “Guns, Love, and Tentacles,” was revealed during a presentation by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford about the plans for “Borderlands 3” this spring. Additional announcements included an update to the game’s horde mode, titled “Mayhem Mode,” along with more free events for all “Borderlands 3” owners during April and May.
“Guns, Love, and Tentacles” is set after the events of the first expansion, “Moxxi’s Heist of The Handsome Jackpot,” and will send the vault hunters to the town of Cursehaven on the planet Xylourgos. The vault hunters have been invited by Sir Hammerlock and Wainwright Jakobs to celebrate their impending nuptials when a mysterious cult throws the festivities into disarray.
Lovecraft’s works serve as the primary influence for the new cult, which worships the corpse of a vault monster that bears a striking resemblance to Cthulu. That same aesthetic runs throughout the rest of the enemies, including monsters that aren’t shy about using their tentacles to wreak havoc.
The expansion will also see the return of Gaige, AKA the Mechromancer and one of the playable characters from “Borderlands 2.” While not playable this time around, she has been hired by Hammerlock and Jakobs to plan their wedding when things turn chaotic.
Besides the new campaign content, the expansion will bring in a slew of new mods, cosmetics and guns for players to grind for.
Pitchford closed out the presentation by teasing the next two expansions planned for “Borderlands 3,” though didn’t provide actual titles. The third expansion was described as “outlaws and dinosaurs” on the game’s content roadmap, which Pitchford supported with a new piece of art. He said the fourth will see players dive into the head of “our favorite Psycho,” in reference to Krieg from “Borderlands 2.”
