George Clooney was hospitalized after dropping so much weight for his role in "The Midnight Sky."
Clooney got candid about his new role in the sci-fi drama that was initially released on Dec. 2. Looking back, the "Money Monster" star spent days in a hospital after being diagnosed with pancreatitis just four days before he was due to start filming. He felt that he didn't look after himself well while losing weight.
"I think I was trying too hard to lose the weight quickly and probably wasn’t taking care of myself," George told Mirror.
Clooney plays a survivor of a global catastrophe in the movie. He is a cancer-riddled astronomer who is trying to contact the crew of a returning spaceship. Clooney also directed the movie. The actor-director, who has helmed six other movies, considers "The Midnight Sky" his biggest project. He wanted to be in his peak condition, so he took his time to recover and he spent weeks getting back his strength.
"It took a few weeks to get better and as a director, it’s not so easy because you need energy," he continued.
"We were out on this glacier in Finland, which made it a lot harder work. But it certainly helped with the character. This is bigger than anything I’ve done before and it was like herding cats to get it done. But, you know, it was fun.”
Aside from losing weight, Clooney also had to grow his beard. However, his wife, daughter and son had different opinions about it.
"I grew a big ugly beard and my son loved it because he’d hide things in it which I wouldn’t know about until I got to work and I’d be like, ‘Oh, there’s a popsicle stuck in my beard’," Clooney explained.
"But my wife and daughter were really happy when it came off because it was very hard to find a face underneath all that mess.”
During the interview, Clooney also mentioned his wife, Amal, and their twins, Alexander and Ella. The actor gushed over his lawyer spouse saying, "I picked right when I picked Amal."
In his previous interview, Clooney said Amal changed everything for him. After his divorce from Talia Balsam, he thought he would never marry again and start a family. Clooney is now happily married to Amal.
Clooney's "The Midnight Sky" will be released on Netflix on Dec. 23.
