George Clooney has revealed why he has been more selective when it comes to projects after turning 60 years old in the summer.
During a new interview with The Guardian, Clooney was asked whether he feels he has "enough money now" at this point in his life. In response, the "Tender Bar" director shared that he's turned down a multimillion-dollar offer to do an ad because he and his wife Amal Clooney were not comfortable being associated with the company.
"Well, yeah. I was offered $35 million for one day's work for an airline commercial, but I talked to Amal about it and we decided it's not worth it," he told the outlet without naming the company. "It was [associated with] a country that, although it's an ally, is questionable at times, and so I thought: 'Well, if it takes a minute's sleep away from me, it's not worth it.'"
The "Ocean's Eleven" actor also explained why he has been taking on fewer acting projects in recent years. Clooney said he felt that in general, there aren't "many great parts" and that he doesn't feel the need to star in movie projects he's not interested in.
Another reason Clooney is doing less acting was that he is now focusing more on his family. He and his wife Amal, who share 4-year-old twins Ella and Alexander, make it a point to always have time for their family and themselves.
"My wife and I had this conversation when I turned 60 this summer. I said, 'I can still bounce around pretty good, and we both love what we do. But we gotta make sure we don't book ourselves silly.' So part of it is just us making sure we live our lives," he explained.
This wasn't the first time Clooney has talked about prioritizing his family over his career. In November, he told Marc Maron on the "WTF with Marc Maron" podcast that as an older dad, he doesn't know how much time he has left, so he wants to dedicate his remaining years to the significant things in his life.
According to Clooney, he had a discussion with his wife about slowing down in the future. While they won't completely stop working, the actor said they plan to spend "less time behind a computer or going on locations."
"Sixty is a number, but I've done all the physicals, knock on wood, in good shape. I feel healthy. Sixty, you can kind of beat the devil a little bit, 80 you can't and that's 20 years from now. Twenty years happens in a flash, and faster as you get older," he said.
Meanwhile, the "Money Monster" star, who was married to Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993, previously admitted that he never thought he would marry again or have his own family until he met Amal. He credited the human rights lawyer for changing his life.
"It was the first time that everything that she did and everything about her was infinitely more important than anything about me," he said on "CBS Sunday Morning" last year.
Clooney's "The Tender Bar," which stars Ben Affleck, will hit select theaters on Dec. 17 and nationwide on Dec. 22. It will also be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video on Jan. 7.
