Democrat Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker are headed for a runoff in the Georgia senate race.

With more than 95% of ballots counted as of 3 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Warnock had 49.4% of the vote, while Walker's had 48.5%. About 35,000 votes separated the two candidates.

Neither candidate was above the 50% threshold needed to win outright.

A runoff election will take place on Dec. 6.

The Georgia Secretary of State's office confirmed Wednesday that state and county officials are still counting the votes. There are more than 3.9 million votes reported and more left to count.

The outcome of the runoff could determine which party controls the senate.

In the early afternoon on Wednesday, Warnock tweeted:" We're going to a runoff, Georgia! Let's do this one more time!"

A tight race was expected, based on recent polling. Warnock had released a video advertisement in early November that warned the election could head to a runoff and might disturb Thanksgiving.

Walker has not posted a comment to Twitter since Saturday.

Walker on Tuesday said he was confident he would win. He compared himself to Ricky Bobby, the character played by Will Ferrell in the 2006 comedy "Talladega Nights."
