A Georgia couple has been accused of killing their landlord who came over to collect rent, and then trying to dispose of her body while police were few steps away.

According to Swainsboro Police Chief Randy J. Ellison, Conney Faye Mercer-Webb, 53, of Twin City, was stabbed and shot to death Wednesday, WRDW reported.

The woman was killed between 9.30 and 10 a.m., but police learned of the incident hours later when they were called around 6.30 p.m. to investigate a vehicle that had been driven off the edge of Modoc Road.

After learning that the car belonged to Webb, officers were informed by her family that she had been missing all day. Officers went door-to-door in the hopes of finding the missing woman, WJBF reported.

While investigating the scene, officers were directed towards the nearby home at 309 Modoc Road that Webb rented out to Nathaniel David and his wife LaShawna.

When police contacted David, he said that Webb, their landlady, had come by earlier in the morning to collect rent but did not come inside the house. He also said that the woman left in her car after a brief conversation.

As the officers were leaving, Webb’s son, who was nearby, started shouting at the officers that he saw her body, which was being removed from the residence. After that, the officers saw David and his wife running away from the house and started chasing them. The two were apprehended and Webb’s body was found at the rear of the residence, police said.

“It became apparent to officers on scene that the suspects, now in custody, were attempting to dispose of the body when they were observed by the victim’s son,” the Swainsboro Police Department was cited as saying by WRDW.

The Davids have been charged with murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a sawed-off shotgun. They are been booked into the Emanuel County jail.

The case remains under investigation.

Last month, a Florida man was charged with murder after he attacked and killed a 70-year-old woman, who evicted him from her home because she was frightened of him. The accused then set the house on fire before leaving the scene.
