Georgia Woman Throws Injured Puppy Into Ocean, Charged With Animal Cruelty
A Georgia woman was arrested on animal cruelty charges after she threw an injured puppy into the ocean on Tybee Island, authorities said.
On Sept. 12, officers with the Tybee Island Police Department responded to a report of someone throwing a dog into the ocean at South Beach, New York Post reported.
Candy Marban, the puppy’s owner, told the officers that the canine was severely injured a week prior to the incident. She told the officers that she did not have money to take it to a vet for medical treatment, according to the report.
"When officers arrived on the scene, they found the puppy curled up in the sand and nursing an obvious injury," the police department said in a release.
The dog was rescued and was sent to Savannah for treatment but it had to be put down, the police said.
"After a thorough examination, the veterinarian determined that the extent of the dog’s injuries was so severe that the only recourse would be euthanasia," the Tybee Island Police Department stated in a Facebook post.
Initially, Marban was issued an ordinance citation, which was changed into a felony charge of aggravated cruelty to animals after the puppy died, WSAV reported.
The police department launched a social media manhunt for Marban on Monday by sharing a wanted poster on Facebook. The post was shared over 2,000 times in under 24 hours.
Marban was arrested and charged a day later.
"The men and women of the Tybee Island Police Department deeply appreciate the help of the social media community and their passion for animal welfare," the department said on social media.
In August, a Florida woman was arrested and charged with animal cruelty after she threw a cat, locked inside a crate, into a river.
On arrival, the officers were told that 53-year-old Christa Anne Thistle was arguing with her long-term boyfriend, with whom she had recently broken up.
The duo had gotten into an argument over the boyfriend not moving out fast. During the feud, Thistle started throwing her ex-boyfriend’s belonging out of the RV.
She is then said to have picked up the cat’s crate, along with the feline inside, and threw it into the Intracoastal Waterway, the police said. The ex-boyfriend jumped after the cat and rescued it.
