Giants’ season receives bad news as Posey has surgery
Buster Posey, the San Francisco Giants star catcher who was recently injured, had surgery on his left ankle. The Giants announced he will be out for the rest of the season, confirming Posey's own statement prior to the surgery.
Giants' trainer Dave Groeschner described a procedure to insert screws into his ankle in order to stabilize the area. He said that the surgery went technically well.
When asked if Posey would return for spring training next year, Groeschner said, The early prognosis is good for that. He's a young guy, he's strong, he's got some good genes, he obviously can play the game well. All that is on his side.
However, Groeschner was cautious saying, This may hinder him a little. It's too soon to tell. We'll have to see how he does with the rehab and where this goes.
Due to another surgery Posey will have in 8-10 weeks to remove the screws, the reigning NL Rookie of the Year won't be able to walk for three months and will remain on crutches during this time.
At the same time, Posey's lower leg will be healing as well. Groeschner said Posey was fortunate to not need surgery for the fracture in his lower leg and that it should heal on its own.
Once Posey is off the crutches, he will begin rehabilitation in order to be ready for next year.
