Giraffe Giving Birth Live Stream: April Closer To Giving Birth After ‘Mammary Development’
While April, the pregnant giraffe, did not go into active labor Monday, the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York, remained optimistic and said that — slowly but surely — “we are getting there!”
The pregnant giraffe became an internet sensation after the upstate New York zoo set up a live stream – on Feb. 10 – to document April’s pregnancy and the birth of her calf. Over 100,000 people were on the live stream late Monday, eagerly waiting for April to show signs of progress.
The zoo posts regular updates — morning and evening — to keep April’s “fans” in the loop about her wellbeing, adding information from her vet, the zookeepers, along with some interesting factoids about giraffes. The posts can be found on its Facebook page, which has over 935,000 followers.

In the post late Monday, the zoo said April was close to giving birth.
“Her mammary development has continued to slowly increase,” the zoo said. “This is Good! We do not expect any additional back end swell, so all judging is now done based on udder changes. You will notice keepers continuing to snap photos of the underside to document changes.”
The pregnant giraffe was recorded nudging at her vet, which the post addressed by saying, “April's attitude is good, though she did strike at (and miss) the vet again - we just think she was giving him a hoof (hand) out the door.”
The newborn will be April’s fourth calf. The giraffe’s 5-year-old mate Oliver, however, is waiting for his first calf. At birth, the calf is expected to weigh about 150 pounds and stand almost 6 feet tall, according to the zoo.
The park added that the calf’s name will be decided through a contest. After staying with April for about 10 months, the calf will be moved to another facility to avoid incestuous behavior.
