Giraffe Giving Birth Yet? April Labor Update
Despite a lot of movement in her belly in the days prior, April the giraffe did not deliver her calf Thursday. The 15-year-old animal is 15 months pregnant, but active labor has not started. For now, she is not giving birth.
Animal Adventure Park, the upstate New York zoo that houses April, issued a statement on the giraffe’s pregnancy Thursday. With thousands of viewers watching the live stream they set up on YouTube, the zoo has issued daily updates for the past week.

“April kept my eyes on the screen most the night and this morning; but we start the day without a new calf on the ground,” the zoo’s message stated. “All in due time and without a rush. She continues to be in great physical and mental condition.”
The giraffes at the zoo spent a majority of their time indoors during April’s pregnancy, but that’s because of the weather. “Strong winds and dropping temperatures may keep our giraffes inside today and the next stretch of days,” Animal Adventure Park said. “Seems winter is refusing to let go of Upstate NY. Once conditions are safe again, the giraffes will have yard access. During indoor stints you may observe extra keeper bonding time, enrichment and training sessions.”
The post generated more than 45,000 reactions from its 618,000 followers. The message also garnered thousands of shared and comments.
Despite her seemingly long pregnancy, April stayed healthy. “April remains in great condition with no concerns from keepers or our vet team,” the New York park said Wednesday. “Activity in the belly remains very visible to the eye - even through the web cam! Slow and steady - mother nature has everything timed right. Keepers will be in shortly and any change will warrant an update!”

Even though thousands are happy to watch April at any given moment, the giraffe isn’t smitten with the sudden attention. “Hello, humans of the Internet. I, April the pregnant giraffe, understand that you are interested in the impending birth of my calf,” she “said” in a statement to Today.com last week. “It is a joyous occasion to be sure and I'm happy to share my joy with the hundreds of thousands of people watching my live stream on YouTube. But newsflash: Staring at me and demanding ‘Where’s that baby already??’ is NOT helping.”
When the calf is born, there will be a vote to determine his or her name.
