Kentavia Blackful was hit by a bullet on Sept. 23 while sitting in her living room in Chicago. The wretched bullet that struck her came through the window as two unknown men intruded into their house and opened fire post 9 p.m.

Kentavia, at the time of being shot, sat at the family computer marking up invitations for her birthday party the next day. Her grandfather was sitting on the front porch when the two gunmen fired indiscriminately. The girl was then immediately rushed to the Christ Hospital where she was pronounced dead hours later on Sept. 24 which was her 12th birthday, Daily Mail reported.

“I was sitting on the porch drinking a beer, and I saw two dudes come from that way with some hoodies on, there were looking at me kind of crazy. Five or six times,” WGN 9 quoted Kentavia’s grandfather, Dennis Hunt as saying.

She breathed her last on the day which would have been her special day.

In his appeal to the public to help catch the gunmen, Community Activist Andrew Holmes said, “This child is in critical condition at Christ Hospital. But the public, let’s stand up, let’s speak out. Let’s tell who these individuals was. Look at your doorbell cameras and see if you have images of these perpetrators.”

Spokeswoman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's Officer Natalia Derevyanny confirmed the incident, which happened on Monday in a house in Harvey, a south suburb of Chicago, in a brief statement to ABC News.

"It was very emotional. She's not suffering anymore. We know she's in a better place," Tribune quoted Kentavia’s other grandfather, Kenneth Donner as saying.

Everyone was deeply saddened by the untimely demise of their little girl. One of her former teachers, Carlene Matthews, called the sixth-grader of Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School an outstanding pupil. She told CBS, "Straight A student. She was the president of the student council; on the basketball team."

The Mayor of Harvey Christopher Clark has vowed to boost patrols in the south Chicago suburb following the shooting. "I don’t know how something like this happens, but I know one thing is that there’s things that we can do about it. When something like this happens, honestly, it rocks everyone to their core," he told Daily Mail.

No arrests have been made so far regarding the shooting and the investigation is ongoing.
