The #GlobalAidForLebanon initiative launched by the manager of singer-songwriter The Weeknd has raised more than $1 million in just 10 days for the country that was rocked with twin explosions earlier this month.

The campaign started by Wassim “Sal” Slaiby will donate the money to various organizations that are working tirelessly to restore normalcy in Beirut where 200 people were killed and thousands were left homeless following the explosions and amid the global health crisis, Variety reported.

The funds will be distributed to organizations like Red Cross Lebanon, the Children’s Cancer Center of Lebanon, and the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP).

Barron Segar, president of the World Food Program USA, applauded Slaiby’s efforts to provide help to the people of Lebanon who need all the support to rebuild their lives after the devastating incident. Segar also noted that the “lifesaving efforts” by everyone who is contributing to this cause will provide to those who need it.

“I would like to call out the extraordinary efforts of Sal Slaiby, Rima Fakih, and Global Citizen for their dedication to ensuring the people of Lebanon get the support they need to survive and rebuild. Their life-saving efforts will ensure that the people who need help will get it, whether its food, shelter, or medical assistance,” Variety quoted Segar, as saying.

On the other hand, Slaiby and his wife Rima believe that this is just the beginning, and they hope that the donations will keep on coming because Beirut needs a lot of help.

“Our hearts are deeply embedded in our homeland of Lebanon and to see our friends, community, and people from across the globe donating to help is truly moving. We have just begun, as this devastation is so deep, and we hope to see the momentum of the fund increase so we can get sufficient help to our country that is in so much need,” Sal and Rima said in the statement to Variety.

The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, has already donated $300,000 to the campaign.

As of late, celebrities like George and Amal Clooney and Bella Hadid have also extended their support by donating to Lebanon-based charities.

The Clooneys donated $100,000 to various charities that are currently working in Beirut. Meanwhile, the supermodel distributed an undisclosed sum of money to various NGOs.

“I am sorry you have to endure this kind of disaster my brothers and sisters. I will be sending donations to the Lebanese Red Cross, as well as ALL of the smaller organizations in the last slide of this post. I hope you will join me,” Hadid wrote on Instagram.
