‘GLOW’ And The Other Netflix Shows Canceled By COVID-19
Coronavirus has taken some of your favorite TV shows. Netflix ordered additional seasons for many TV shows, but the streamer has since canceled multiple series due to COVID-19 constraints. Certainly, it’s not the most important thing the pandemic has taken, but with more couch time than ever, these cancellations hurt.
“GLOW” — The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling are no more. The Netflix dramedy already had one episode of the fourth and final season filmed before production was shut down, but they won’t return to the ring. The huge cast, led by Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin, and the physical nature of a wrestling show made it too difficult to film under coronavirus constraints.
“COVID has killed actual humans,” series creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch said in a statement. “It's a national tragedy and should be our focus. COVID also apparently took down our show. Netflix has decided not to finish filming the final season of GLOW.”
“The Society” — Deadline reports “The Society,” which was renewed for Season 2 last year, was supposed to start filming in September. The teen drama followed a group of high schoolers who were suddenly on their own after the adults disappear from their wealthy town (à la "Lord of the Flies"). The show left off on a cliffhanger, which disappointed many viewers.
Star Kathryn Newton told fans she was “heartbroken” while actress Gideon Adlon called the surprise cancellation a “gut punch” while talking to fans on Instagram Live.
“I Am Not Okay With This” — Netflix made it clear that the coming-of-age drama about a teen girl with superpowers was canceled due to COVID-19. “We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with second seasons of 'The Society' and 'I Am Not Okay With This,'” Netflix said in a statement “We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by COVID.”
Netflix’s other recent cancellations (“Teenage Bounty Hunters,” “Altered Carbon,” “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance”) were not blamed on COVID. Instead, the usual reasons of cost and low viewership caused those series to end.
However, Netflix isn’t the only company canceling TV shows because of COVID-19. ABC canceled “Stumptown” despite renewing it for Season 2 earlier this year. Similarly, TruTV’s “I’m Sorry” was previously renewed for Season 3 but will no longer move forward.
