'The Goldbergs' Actress Wendi McLendon-Covey Speaks About Jeff Garlin's Exit
Wendi McLendon-Covey, who plays Beverly Goldberg on the sitcom "The Goldbergs," revealed that it is hard for the team to work without Jeff Garlin following his exit but they are doing their "best."
The 52-year-old actress took to Twitter on Wednesday to respond to a journalist named Noel Murray, who wrote, "They should either cancel The Goldbergs or kill off Jeff Garlin’s character because the workarounds they’ve been using this season ain’t working" alongside a clip from the show.
"Thanks for the great suggestion Noel!" the actress replied, "This season threw us for a loop because a.) it's hard to incorporate someone who doesn't want to be there and wants to leave mid-scene, and b.) we werent about to re-write the 2nd half of the season. We're doing our best."
Fans took to the comments section to share their reactions. "If my co-workers were trying to get me fired because of a couple of jokes I made, I wouldn't be too excited about being there either," a fan wrote.
However, another fan suggested that they should recast someone else instead of Garlin or declare him dead. "I hope #TheGoldbergs gets renewed for one more season. Perhaps a recast or an off screen death of the Murray character can be written into the show. Other shows have survived departures of key cast members so I don’t see any reason why this one can’t," the fan wrote.
Garlin left the show last year in December after allegations of misconduct and "abusive" behavior on the sets. After his exit, he spoke with Vanity Fair and clarified that it was a completely "missed" joke.
"I will say the joke was missed and I apologize to him. If someone misses a joke, that’s unfortunate to me. I don’t like it," he said, after confirming, "No, I was not fired from The Goldbergs. I have not been fired from The Goldbergs."
"The Goldbergs" first aired in 2013 on the ABC network. The sitcom also stars Sean Giambrone, Troy Gentile, Hayley Orrantia, George Segal and Patton Oswalt.
On the work front, Garlin will be next seen in a historical drama, "Babylon," which is slated to release on Dec. 25. The movie will star Tobey Maguire, Margot Robbie and Emma Stone.
McLendon-Covey, on the other hand, will be featured in movies like "Paint" and "Sick Girl."
