Golden Globes 2017: Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher May Be Among Celebrities Honored At Awards This Year, Report Says
The 74th Golden Globe Awards, set to take place Sunday night, will honor recently dead celebrities who died toward the end of 2016, a report said.
“We have not done an ‘In Memoriam’ on the Golden Globes. Those things are handled really well by the Oscars and the Screen Actors Guild,” Golden Globes producer Barry Adelman told People magazine at the award’s preview day Wednesday. “But we do realize there were some special circumstances of very recent nature that happened and I think we’ll be acknowledging that,” Adelman added.
A number of well-loved celebrities passed away close to the end of last year. Of these, some notable names are “Careless Whisper” hitmaker George Michael, actor Alan Thicke of “Growing Pains” fame, and “The Brady Bunch” star Florence Henderson.
The deaths of five-time Golden Globe nominee Debbie Reynolds and her daughter, Carrie Fisher — famous for her portrayal of Princess Leia in the Star Wars film series — caused widespread grief and the actresses are expected to be honored at this year’s edition of the Golden Globes.
Fisher, 60, was flying from London to Los Angeles on Dec. 23 when she went into cardiac arrest. The actress passed away four days later at UCLA Medical Center. Her mother died a day later at the age of 84 in Los Angeles.
Adelman did not elaborate on how the recent celebrity deaths will be honored at the awards, which will be hosted by comedian and television host Jimmy Fallon. Awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the Golden Globes honor acting in film — in 14 categories — and television — in 11 categories.
The Golden Globes will air live on NBC from the Beverly Hilton Hotel’s Grand Ballroom in Beverly Hills, California, at 8 p.m. EST Sunday. The HFPA has teamed up with Twitter to host “The HFPA Presents: Globes Red Carpet Live” official red carpet pre-show, which will stream live on Twitter from 6–8 p.m. EST.
