The Golden State Warriors’ season opener couldn’t have gone any worse as the team was embarrassed in a 125-99 loss against the Brooklyn Nets Tuesday night. Even though it was only one game, it could be an indication that the Bay Area team doesn’t have what it takes to compete for a title.

In the span of just a few hours, Golden State’s championship odds fell significantly at multiple sportsbooks. Given +1800 odds to win the 2021 NBA Finals Tuesday at Bovada, the Warriors have +2200 title odds Wednesday morning.

One day before the season opener, BetOnline gave Golden State +2500 odds to win the title. The Warriors’ odds are down to +3300 now that the season is underway.

Only the Los Angeles Lakers were a more popular championship bet than Golden State to start the season, according to BetOnline. The Lakers are still favored to repeat, despite losing 116-109 against the Los Angeles Clippers in their first game.

Draymond Green didn’t suit up for Golden State in the opener because of a foot injury. He could make his debut within a week.

The Warriors’ chances of winning the Finals likely went out the window on the day of the 2020 NBA Draft when Klay Thompson tore his Achilles and was lost for the year. Thompson missed all of last season with a torn ACL.

Stephen Curry only played five games last season, resulting in an NBA-worst 15-50 record for Golden State. The two-time MVP will have to be among the league’s top scorers in order for the Warriors to have a successful season.

Curry scored 20 points on 7-21 shooting in Brooklyn. He missed eight of his 10 three-point attempts.

Rookie James Wiseman was Golden State’s second-leading scorer.

Without Green and Thompson, Curry is the Warriors’ only All-Star caliber player. Andrew Wiggins and Kelly Oubre, who will be asked to play key roles this season, combined to only score 19 points on 30 shot attempts on Opening Night.

Brooklyn is considered to be a top team in the East. Golden State’s schedule doesn’t get any easier in their second game when they visit the Milwaukee Bucks on Christmas Day.
