KEY POINTS

  • The Golden State Warriors will select the second overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft
  • One prospect that may consider is Memphis’ big man James Wiseman
  • Wiseman averaged 19.7 points and 10.7 rebounds in his college career

The recent draft lottery saw the Minnesota Timberwolves win the first overall pick. The Golden State Warriors were awarded the second pick and are in a position to select a high-value prospect. It has been heavily anticipated that James Wiseman will suit up for the Bay Area squad.

The previous year in the NBA draft had a clear direction on who would be selected as the first and second picks. It was the consensus in the mock drafts that Zion Williamson and Ja Morant were the top players in their class. This year however shows a little more variety with players such as LaMelo Ball, Anthony Edwards and Obi Toppin have all been brought up as the possible top prospects of the year.

But with the recent development of the Warriors ending up with the second overall pick saw a clearer path in terms of mock drafts and speculations. Choosing Wiseman for Golden State is a strong decision to make that will benefit the Warriors’ efforts of bouncing back in the next coming seasons, per Sports Illustrated. To add to this, NBA legend Chris Mullin chipped into the conversation and also inclined on a Wiseman selection.

With how Golden State is looking to regain its dominance in the league, having someone like Wiseman in the lineup would do wonders for the team. The Splash Brothers Steph Curry and Klay Thompson are looking to return as a healthy duo and they would need the support of a strong frontcourt. Players such as Draymond Green can facilitate within the paint but having someone of Wiseman’s caliber adds an even more intimidating presence inside.

Throughout Wiseman’s college career, he’s shown how he can crash the boards and score when he needs to. In his playing year in Memphis, he averaged 19.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and three blocks an outing. The seven-foot-one specimen has often been compared to DeAndre Jordan who can make a strong impact with his incredible leaping ability and physicality inside.

It will be interesting to see what the Warriors would do with the pick. If ever they use it and not trade it for more assets, having Wiseman in the club would definitely benefit the franchise in the immediate future.
