Gomis's late score earns Lyon a 1-1 tie with Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho appeared to be playing for a draw, and he got what he wanted, but he probably knows that he let one slip away, as Real Madrid settled for a 1-1 draw at Lyon.
After a free kick by Cristiano Ronaldo from the left side that hit the far post in minute 49, Real Madrid's ensuing corner kick resulted in a header by Sergio Ramos that hit the crossbar. Real Madrid must have felt snake-bitten with two great efforts in a row that came up short.
But Real Madrid would get on the board, thanks to forward substitute Karim Benzema, who replaced Emmanuel Adebayor in minute 64.
Less than two minutes later, Benzema slipped a ball through the legs of Lloris to give Real Madrid the lead.
The French striker had taken a pass from Cristiano Ronaldo and worked his magic with a right-footed shot that embarrassed his fellow France teammate, and his former team.
Lyon would come back.
Off a set piece, the ball found Bafetimbi Gomis who scored on what might have been an offside in minute 83. Gomis met the ball off a deflection and flicked in it.
It was redemption for Gomis who missed a great opportunity in the first half when his shot was blocked, and with Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas off his line.
A draw is what Mourinho wanted, but the head coach has to feel disappointed that Real Madrid did not come out of the match with a win.
