Google Pixel vs. Huawei P10: Which Has Better Camera Per DxOMark Test?

Huawei took the wraps of its flagship phone, the P10, at the recently concluded Mobile World Congress and impressed many consumers with the handset’s camera technology. Today, the device received its DxOMark Test result, so it’s now easier to compare it with Google Pixel, which previously received the highest rating of the industry standard for camera and lens image quality measurements and ratings.

The Huawei P10 sports a dual-sensor Leica back camera with a 20-megapixel RGB sensor and a 12-megapixel monochrome sensor. It has an aperture of f/2.2 and has many standard flagship phone camera features like laser autofocus and optical image stabilization. It also has HDR, phase detection, touch focus and dual-LED (dual tone) flash.

After subjecting the Huawei P10’s Leica camera to several image quality tests, it scored 87 points from DxOMark. The industry standard regarded the device as one of the best smartphones for photography enthusiasts. For still capture, the handset actually got a sub-score of 88 due to the fact that it provides good exposures in all lighting conditions, including extremely low-light conditions. It also has accurate white balance as well as good color rendering.

DxOMark also lauded the Huawei P10’s autofocus for being “fast, accurate, and repeatable in both trigger and auto mode.” In addition, it recognized the very solid performance of the dual-sensor camera in the outdoors because of the camera’s accurate white balance, well-exposed images, good color rendering and excellent detail preservation.

Despite the high rating of the P10, it is still no match for Google’s Pixel handset. Even the Galaxy S7 edge scored better than Huawei’s newest flagship device with 88 points. The only upside here is Huawei managed to outdo its own self by putting out a smartphone with a higher rating than its Mate 9’s 85 points, as pointed out by GSM Arena.

Finally, there are several cons that DxOMark noted about the P10’s phone camera. There’s luminance noise visible when taken pictures of the sky, slight color shading in very low-light conditions and a subtle detail issue when taking outdoor shots. When using the back camera for video recording, there is also a visible “jello” effect when walking outdoors and strong luminance noise in all lighting conditions, among others.
