GoPro Hero 6 Black Leak Confirms 4K 60FPS Video Recording
GoPro is expected to release a new action camera later this fall, but it looks like it has already leaked online. A photo of the GoPro Hero 6 Black has already appeared on a website, and it shows the upcoming camera’s specs.
The photo of the product box of the GoPro Hero 6 Black was shared online by Photo Rumors. The site claims a reader sent the picture to them. It’s very likely that the photo of the GoPro Hero 6 Black was submitted by someone from a retail employee, but that’s just speculation at this point.
From what we can see in the photo, it looks like the GoPro Hero 6 Black action camera will have a similar design to its predecessor, the Hero 5 Black. The product box also listed that the Hero 6 will feature a 12-megapixel camera, 4K video recording at 60 frames-per-second, and waterproofing down to 33 feet (10m) under water.
The most significant spec bump on the Hero 6 Black is that it’s capable of recording 4K videos at 60fps. The Hero 5 was also capable of recording videos at 4K resolution, but its frame rate is capped at 30 frames-per-second.
A higher video frame rate is sought after by many users since it will be able to record sharper videos even when there’s a lot of moving involved. This is particularly important for those users who need an action camera for doing extreme sports and other high-octane outdoor activities.
The existence of the GoPro Hero 6 Black was confirmed by GoPro itself last week when the company reported that it expect its third-quarter 2017 revenue and gross margin to be “at the high-end of guidance.”
“Consumer demand for GoPro products is strong," GoPro chief operating officer Charles Prober said. “Channel inventories have been reduced and we're incredibly excited about the upcoming launch of two great new products, HERO6 and our 5.2K spherical camera, Fusion.”
GoPro’s action camera business isn’t doing too well. International Business Times reported back in March that GoPro had to cut 270 jobs including full-time workers to reduce its operating expenses to achieve its profitability goals this year.
“Today we are updating revenue guidance for the first quarter of 2017,” GoPro said at the time. “We now expect to deliver revenue in the upper end of our guidance range of between $190 million and $210 million.”
Last year, GoPro released two versions of its Hero 5 camera, the Hero 5 Black and the more compact Hero 5 Session. The company says that the Hero 5 Black was the best-selling digital camera in the U.S. for three straight quarters, while the Hero 5 Session was right behind it, according to The Verge.
GoPro also released its own camera drone last year called the GoPro Karma, but it suffered shortly after its initial release due to an issue with the battery. The Karma drone was recalled in November 2016, but it went back on sale in February 2017 after GoPro fixed the issue.
Right now, the company doesn’t need anymore hiccups with the GoPro Hero 6 Black. It will have to be successful and continue the Hero 5’s momentum if GoPro intends to reach its goals for this year. The GoPro Hero 6 Black is currently rumored to be officially announced on Sept. 28.
