Goran Dragic Salary: Injured Guard Is 2nd Highest Paid In Miami Heat
KEY POINTS
- Goran Dragic is the second highest paid in the Miami roster
- He suffered an injury during Game 1 of NBA finals against the Lakers
- Dragic will become an unrestricted free agent after this season
Goran Dragic is making $19.2 million this year. With his latest injury, basketball fans might have seen the last of Dragic wearing the Heat uniform.
Dragic signed a 5-year, $85 million contract to play for the Heat in 2015. All the money in the deal was guaranteed. Dragic has proven he can provide stability running the offense and providing scoring when needed. He suited up for the Phoenix Suns and the Houston Rockets before joining Miami, a report from Spotrac revealed.
According to Basketball Reference, the 34-year-old is the second highest paid player in Heat uniform. Jimmy Butler is making $32 million this year. After Dragic, Andre Iguodala, Solomon Hill and Kelly Olynyk round up the top five.
The former Suns guard will become an unrestricted free agent after this season, which means he is free to sign with any team. The Dallas Mavericks were previously linked to signing Dragic in the offseason but talks never materialized. The former Rocket is a compatriot of Dallas star Luka Doncic, and they won a championship for the Slovenian national basketball team.
The 11-year-veteran can mentor the 21-year-old Doncic, who at his young age has shown immense potential. He has been named in All-NBA first team alongside Anthony Davis, LeBron James, James Harden and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Having a veteran and national team teammate in the squad could do wonders for Doncic.
Meanwhile, the Ljubljana native suffered a devastating injury before halftime in Game 1 of NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. Video replays showed the combo guard falling on his own, a non-contact injury, which is usually worse. Now, it has been claimed that Dragic had a plantar tear on his left foot, per CBS Sports. There is a possibility he will not return to join the Heat in the remainder of the series, but there is also a chance he could come back. The media outlet noted that Dragic left the arena without the use of a walking boot.
The Heat is suddenly hobbled with injuries. Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler were also unfortunate during the game. Adebayo suffered a shoulder injury while Butler twisted his ankle. Only Butler was able to return to the game. Nevertheless, the Heat still have a lot of firepower with Tyler Herro, Andre Iguodala, Kendrick Nunn and Jae Crowder.
Fans are hoping Dragic can still return to the series. His presence on the court will be greatly missed by the team that will be giving the orchestrating duties to rookie Nunn and Butler.
