We still don’t know if a key cast member on “Game of Thrones” died at the end of Episode 5, but the aftermath of the battle that may have ended his life, as well as another big battle heating up, will take center stage as the penultimate season continues.

Spoiler Alert: The Ending of “Game of Thrones” Season 7, Episode 4, “The Spoils Of War” is discussed below.

As the Lannister armies headed back to King’s Landing, they were halted on their way to the capital by Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) making a power play, and descending upon them with both her Dothraki horde and Drogon, who scorched hundreds of men to death in mere minutes. Qyburn’s (Anton Lesser) Scorpion machine helped take Drogon down after Bronn (Jerome Flynn) aimed a well-placed arrow, but Jaime’s (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) attempt to charge at Dany and Drogon proved to be an unwise decision. Though he was spared a fiery death at the last minute by Bronn tackling him out of Drogon’s path, both men plunged into a lake afterwards, and Jaime appeared to be sinking to the bottom, with the weight of both his armor and famous gold hand forcing him to drown.

Now, in Episode 5, though it’s unclear if Jaime has survived and escaped or actually died, Daenerys is ready to exert her power over the men who managed to make it out of the battle, warning those who didn’t perish, either by Dothraki blade or dragon fire, that they need to accept her as their ruler, or they too will find themselves joining their fallen comrades.

“I’m not here to murder,” Daenerys says in a preview clip for the episode. “Bend the knee and join me. Or, refuse and die.”

Though she felt she needed to make a desperate move in order to reassert her claim, and the fact that she won’t go down without a fight when it comes to taking the Iron Throne, her advisors will worry that her recent actions are a bad sign about what kind of ruler she may be, and they will realize they need to find a way to reign her back in, over fears she may be too much like her father, The Mad King, after all.

“You need to find a way to make her listen,” Varys (Conleth Hill) tells Tyrion (Peter Dinklage).

However, the bulk of the action in the episode will likely take place back at Dragonstone, where Jon Snow (Kit Harington) has been mining Dragonglass in order to take it back North and use it as weapons against the Night King and his army. When he receives word that his brother, Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright), is back at Winterfell, and has seen something shocking in his visions regarding the White Walkers and the fight against them, he will realize that the battle to keep them from crossing to the other side of the Wall will need to be stepped up greatly.

“Bran saw the Night King and his army marching towards Eastwatch,” he says to Dany, Varys and Davos (Liam Cunningham) in the clip.

“Bad things are coming,” Davos seems to agree.

“Game of Thrones” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EDT on HBO.
