Grammy Awards 2015: Sam Smith Wins Best New Artist; Find Out Why It Was The Most Important To Him
Sam Smith, 22, won the first 2015 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Taylor Swift presented the award at the Sunday ceremony. “I happen to have a lot of friends in this category this year, so I just want to say, as a former loser of Best New Artist in 2008, if you do not win this award, it’s going to be fine," Swift said. "Just shake it off."
The British singer was pleasantly surprised as he walked up to the Grammy stage. "Oh my gosh, I’ve got to try and say something now without crying," Smith said.
Smith kept his speech short and sweet. He thanked his manager, label, producers and all those involved with his album, “In The Lonely Hour.” He ended his speech with a shout out to his family. “Mum and Dad, Lily and Mabel, I’ve won a Grammy!” Smith said.
Smith was also nominated for three more Grammy Awards throughout the night: Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Album of the Year. However, Smith admitted earlier on the red carpet Best New Artist was the most important to him.
“For me it’s Best New Artist because you can only win that one once. I went on Wikipedia last night, and if you look at all the people who have won it before, it’s just incredible, so I’d love that,” Smith told Ryan Seacrest on the E! Red Carpet.
The 57th Annual Grammy Awards aired Feb. 8 on CBS. Find out how to live stream the show here and read our live blog here.
