Grammys 2017: Why Are Drake, Kanye West And Justin Bieber Reportedly Skipping The Award Show?
The Grammys are supposed to be music’s biggest night, but when the 2017 Grammy Awards roll around on Feb. 12, the ceremony may be without a few of music’s biggest stars.
Frank Ocean’s absence from the upcoming show has been known since he revealed his decision to sit it out, but now, reports say Drake, Kanye West and Justin Bieber will also miss out on the show.
While Bieber, Drake and Kanye are not protesting the awards, TMZ reports the artists no longer find the Grammys relevant to younger stars. According to the site, Bieber believes the Grammys don’t do a good job at representing younger singers.
It’s unknown what Kanye and Bieber will do instead of attending the show, but Drake will be performing in Europe. The rapper has a stop on his Boy Meets World Tour scheduled for Feb. 12 in Manchester, England.
Kanye previously revealed his intentions to skip the show if Ocean wasn’t nominated, which ended up happening but at Ocean’s fault. “As artists, we’ve got to come together to fight,” Kanye said during an October concert.
Ocean’s 2016 album, “Blonde,” was one of the year’s most critically acclaimed projects and would have likely racked up a number of nominations, but the singer opted not to submit his album for consideration.
Unlike Drake, Kanye and Bieber, Ocean’s idea was a protest of the Recording Academy failing to award young, black artists. The singer called it his “Colin Kaepernick moment.”
Ocean told the New York Times, “That institution certainly has nostalgic importance. It just doesn’t seem to be representative very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down.”
As for the others, while they won’t be at the awards, they are still nominated for a number of awards. West and Drake will both face off for best rap song and best rap album, while Bieber’s “Purpose” is nominated for album of the year.
