Is ‘Green Lantern’ Actually An ‘Arrow’ Spinoff? Diggle’s Future Teased
Tuesday’s “Arrow” series finale had a big cliffhanger for John Diggle. He saw something fall from the sky and when he opened the box, it glowed bright green. That has fans wondering if actor David Ramsey is starring as Dig in HBO Max’s “Green Lantern.”
Unfortunately, no one is giving any straight answers. It seems The CW TV show had to approach DC Entertainment for permission to drop a Green Lantern easter egg in the “Arrow” finale, and they had to agree to very specific terms, executive producer Marc Guggenheim said.
“This was something that was worked out over a year ahead with DC Entertainment. We very specifically negotiated and discussed the parameters, and I feel like to say anything beyond what we have shown you would violate our agreement with DC,” he revealed to reporters at a post-screening Q&A (via Entertainment Weekly).
Ramsey echoed his boss’ statement. “That was very important [to pay off the fan theory]…There’s been a bit of a pay-off. We’ll see what all of that means,” he teased. “I’m with Marc, anything beyond that is kind of violating these parameters that we’ve been given by DC that we have to honor, but I think we’ve done some justice to the six-year tease.”
However, Ramsey added that audiences will find out what Diggle’s future is. “I don’t know what that means,” Ramsey said (via TVLine). “But he does go to Metropolis, and he got a green box. We’ll still see, believe it or not. We’ll find out.”
Producer Greg Berlanti works on both “Arrow” and “Green Lantern,” and “Crisis on Infinite Earths” even had a quick scene that referenced the HBO Max series (which does not have an offical release date and hasn't even announced casting yet). However, that doesn’t necessarily mean audiences will learn about Diggle’s future on “Green Lantern.”
A confirmed “Arrow” spinoff has already been set up. If “Green Arrow and the Canaries” is picked up for a full season, Diggle’s adult children will be involved. Presumably, especially with his engagement, J.J. (Charlie Barnett) will have to at least mention his father at some point.
Also, “Superman & Lois” has already been greenlit. So far, only Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch have been confirmed as cast members, but Diggle mentioned that Lyla (Audrey Marie Anderson) accepted a job in Metropolis. Will ARGUS be part of the new series? They could pretty easily crossover if necessary.
In any case, fans haven’t seen the last of Diggle yet. He’ll be on the Feb. 4 episode of “The Flash” to give Barry (Grant Gustin) something Oliver (Stephen Amell) left for him. Green Lantern fans shouldn't get too excited, though. He won't mention any glowing green boxes.
