Green Monday might just be most wonderful time of the year. Monday Dec. 12 marks what tends to be the biggest (and one of the most lucrative) online shopping days of the year.

The term Green Monday was coined by the auction Web site eBay in 2007. This day tends to be one of the heaviest online spending days because it is the two week mark until Christmas Day, allowing 14 days for gifts to arrive.

For the 2011 holiday season, consumers have already spent $24.6 billion online, a 15 percent increase over one year ago. Last week alone shoppers spent $5.9 billion on retail. Six days this year have surpassed the billion-dollar threshold.

According to The Hill, Green Monday might just reel in some of the heftiest online sales to date.

These highlights represent another very positive sign for the holiday shopping season, as the week following 'Cyber Week' often experiences relative softness in spending momentum due to retailers pulling back on their promotional activity, said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni.
