“Grey’s Anatomy” will kick off Season 12 with a bang – literally. In a promo video for the premiere, which is set to air Thursday, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) can be seen abruptly awakened from her slumber with the sound of a crash – and then another one.

Meredith jumps out of bed to investigate the unsettling noise, only to find Amelia (Caterina Scorsone), her new roommate, swinging away with a sledgehammer. (“Sledgehammer” also happens to be the title of the premiere installment.)

“What the hell are you doing?” she screams at her sister-in-law, who replies that she was inspired to knock down the wall after their conversation last night.

“I think it’s a great idea,” Maggie (Kelly McCreary), Mer’s second roomie, chimes in, adding that she’d love to bring some light into the house. But after seeing the anger on her half-sister’s face, Maggie quickly changes her tune.

Maggie is then forced to spend the rest of the lengthy trailer stuck between Mer and Amelia’s feud, which consists of arguing over demolition, laundry and dishes.

"Why don't I learn?” Meredith ponders. “I take in strays because they're sad and lonely and homeless. The truth is, strays are flea-ridden creatures who pee on your stuff.”

When Season 12 debuts, fans will watch as Meredith decides to move out of her McMansion and back into her mother’s old home (along with Amelia and Maggie) following the heartbreaking death of Derek (Patrick Dempsey). And just as the promo video above teased, viewers can expect their living arrangements to be a bit on the … awkward side.

"Right now it's very funny. Those three women are very different and don't have very much in common, which is fantastic," the showrunner, Shonda Rhimes, revealed to the Hollywood Reporter, adding that it's a “fascinating dynamic – it’s family.”

Pompeo then dished to Entertainment Weekly that although Meredith likes having people around, there will inevitably be conflict among the sisters “because it’s a one-hour drama.”

“And I’m sure there’ll be drinking and conflict, and boys will come into it at some point with three girls in the house,” she teased.

“Grey’s Anatomy” will air its Season 12 premiere on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
