Grizzlies Star Ja Morant Responds To NBA Dunk Contest Request
KEY POINTS
- Ja Morant is regarded as a high-flying scoring point guard
- Morant was quick to share his real thoughts on the idea of joining this year’s Slam Dunk contest
- The Grizzlies star ranked third among Western Conference guards in the All-Star fan voting
Despite the hype, Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant remains unfazed and focused on his game.
Now playing his third season with the Grizzlies, Morant has undeniably established himself as one of the best players in the league through his consistent all-around scoring. Unlike most guards his size, Morant is beginning to earn a reputation as a big dunker, having racked up a number of electrifying dunks in his NBA highlight reel.
With this year’s All-Star weekend fast approaching, one fan has urged him to participate in the Slam Dunk contest. However, Morant let his followers know that he’s not interested in it, replying with a GIF that says “Nah.”
On Thursday, the NBA released the first official All-Star fan voting results. In it, Morant ranked third among the Western Conference guards in total accumulated votes and 15th in overall rankings.
Morant’s All-Star fan vote ranking is looking good so far, but prior to the results, it was a hot subject of debate whether he deserves to be one this year.
Revealing his real thoughts on the matter, Morant stressed that he’s not paying much attention to it and that he will just leave the talking to his “teammates.”
"I really don't focus on it too much, honestly," the Grizzlies guard told ESPN. "Everybody who knows me, including my teammates, people throughout the organization, know I'm a very humble guy, but that I'm also confident.”
"So I'm gonna let my teammates continue to talk for me," he continued. "I'm just gonna go out there and do what I can on the floor to help prove their case right even more."
Unsurprisingly, the question of whether or not Morant has really reached All-Star level wasn’t a tough one to answer for his teammates. Grizzlies forward Desmond Bane even emphasized that it’s a no-brainer and “the real conversation” right now is whether Morant is “the best point guard” there is at the moment.
"He's special," Bane said of Morant. "People debate whether or not he should be an All-Star, but I think we should be debating whether he's the best point guard in the league."
"I don't think it's any question he's an All-Star,” he continued. “The real conversation is, 'Is he the best point guard in the league?'"
Morant is currently playing the best season of his NBA career. To date, he is logging 25 points, 6.6 assists and 5.8 rebounds per game on a remarkable 49% shooting.
