Groundhog Day 2014 Live Stream: Will Punxsutawney Phil See His Shadow Or Will There Be An Early Spring?
Groundhog Day 2014 takes place on Feb. 2 and the annual event will include a live stream from Gobbler's Knob, Pa., the home of Punxsutawney Phil. The event starts early, meaning you won't miss the Super Bowl, with Phil leaving his burrow at 7:20 a.m. EST. What he sees on the 128th annual Groundhog Day could let us know if we can look forward to some warmer weather.
There has only been "one" Phil, according to the official history, leaving his burrow and prognosticating the weather. As legend has it, if he sees his shadow we should expect six more weeks of winter, and if he doesn't see his shadow, we can expect an early spring. The Groundhog Day tradition stems from Candlemas Day, an early Christian holiday. The quaint celebration grew in popularity due in part to "Groundhog Day," which starred Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. Now with live streams, more people from around the world can tune in and watch Phil predict the weather.
Interestingly, as noted by USA Today, this will be the first time Groundhog Day and the Super Bowl fall on the same day. While Phil may get the majority of the attention, he's not the only groundhog working hard on Feb. 2. Staten Island Chuck and Buckeye Chuck are just two other groundhogs that will be stepping out of their burrows on Sunday.
Staten Island Chuck, infamous for biting former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, will welcome newly elected Mayor Bill De Blasio to the Staten Island Zoo, SILive.com reports. The event at the Staten Island Zoo begins at 6:30 a.m. EST, and Staten Island Chuck will exit his burrow at 7:30 a.m. EST.
Despite Punxsutawney Phil's prestige as a prognosticator, his record is less than impressive. Stormfax estimates a 39 percent success rate for Phil's predictions. Staten Island Chuck seems to have more success, with the Staten Island Zoo reporting a success rate above 80 percent since 1981.
