KEY POINTS

  • "GTA 6" could be out by 2024
  • SEC filing shows massive marketing budget for Take-Two
  • "GTA Online" tries to buy "GTA 6" more time to develop

Rockstar Games has been quiet on "Grand Theft Auto 6," a game that is technically considered to be under development. So far, no official release date for "GTA 6" has come out and it appears that it is years away. A recent SEC filing may have revealed when "GTA 6" will be coming out and that would be in 2024.

A Take-Two Interactive SEC filing may have spilled some information on "GTA 6" where about $89 million will allegedly be spent on marketing the next "GTA" installment for a 12 month period ending on Mar. 31, 2024. The budget is double the amount to be budgeted compared to previous years. Initially, these marketing costs were tailed for 2023 but Take-Two changed the fiscal year to 2024.

Of course, the amount to be spent on marketing may not necessarily be tied up with the plans of Rockstar Games for "Grand Theft Auto 6." Stephens analyst Jeff Cohen that it is possible that "GTA 6" could be released by Mar. 31, 2024. To back up his claim, he cites the route that "Red Dead Redemption 2" followed before the sequel was officially announced. Little has been known on the plans of Take-Two management for the next five years. However, "Grand Theft Auto 6" is seen as the only plausible game that would need such a big marketing boost.

That SEC filing could be something and nothing. Regardless, it would be best to take this lightly for now. The spotlight remains on "GTA Online" and "GTA V." "Grand Theft Auto 5" is still a hot game being played right now with over 130 million units shipped. The only problem with it is that it has been around for about seven years now. Seeing "Grand Theft Auto 6" come in 2024 makes sense, more or less having the same allowance that the "Red Dead Redemption" series had. "Red Dead Redemption" came out in 2010 while "Red Dead Redemption 2" debuted in 2018.

"GTA Online" is the next best thing to consider right now, seen by most as the game that is buying "GTA 6" some time. Rockstar Game servers were rocked a bit recently with the influx of millions of new players. Unfortunately, that included hackers who have been causing chaos to gamers both in multiplayer play and story mode. Much of that can be read in a previous post.
