Halle Berry Engaged: Who Is Fiancé Olivier Martinez?

Rumors swirled around an emerald ring actress Halle Berry has been wearing since January, and it turns out it was an engagement ring. Her fiancé, French actor Olivier Martinez, recently confirmed the news to the Miami Herald when asked whether or not the couple was truly engaged.

Yes, of course it's true, Martinez told the Herald, while visiting Miami for the opening of his new restaurant in South Beach called Villa Azur.

Although the couple has been dating since 2010, some are still wondering who the lucky Frenchman is that snagged the desirable Berry away from a majority of men who would never have a chance with her anyway.

Martinez, 46, was born in Paris, France on Jan. 12, 1966, to a Spanish-Moroccan father, a former professional boxer and later a mechanic, and a French mother, a secretary. He had intended to follow in his father's footsteps as a boxer, but gave up the dream after a car crash injured his back.

At 23, Martinez was bartending when a casting director noticed him and encouraged him to pursue acting. Soon after, he enrolled in the prestigious French acting school, Conservatoire National Superieur d'Art Dramatique.

Martinez worked mostly in French television and films, earning the nickname of the French Brad Pitt. He made his American debut in the 2002 film Unfaithful, opposite Richard Gere and Diane Lane. He has had several more roles in other Hollywood films like S.W.A.T., Knight and Day and Dark Tide, where he starred alongside Berry.

It was on the set of Dark Tide that Martinez and Berry developed a relationship. In the film, Berry plays a shark expert suffering from the trauma of losing her mentor to the deadly Great White, and Martinez plays her ex-boyfriend and diving partner who convinces her to get back into the water, when a millionaire business man requests the thrill of a lifetime. It's hard to imagine how the two couldn't have fallen in love in those circumstances.

Martinez is known to have been involved with many glamorous women, including actress Mira Sorvino and singer Kylie Minogue, though this will be his first marriage, assuming it happens. For Berry, it will be her third marriage. The 45-year-old actress was wed to baseball player David Justice from 1992 to 1997 and to R&B singer Eric Benét from 2001 to 2005. As the saying goes, the third time's the charm.
