Hallmark’s ‘Season For Love’ Screenwriters Spill On Cast Chemistry, Character-Naming Process
Hallmark Channel’s final Summer Nights movie premiere, “Season for Love,” airs Saturday night, and International Business Times spoke with the film’s screenwriters, Heather Provost and Scott Damian, all about it.
The new rom-com brings together Autumn Reeser and Marc Blucas as high school sweethearts finding their way back to each other after years apart. Reeser stars as Tyler, a sous chef from San Francisco who just lost her job and is now competing in her Texas hometown’s Annual BBQ Cook-off. Blucas plays Corey, who’s coming back to Texas from New York to be the celebrity chef at the cook-off. As the two spend time with each other because of the competition, the flame they once had begins to reignite.
“It’s a really good time,” Provost told IBT of co-writing this Hallmark flick. “Just kind of getting into these characters’ brains and creating their journey and knowing that people all over the country are gonna watch it and they’re gonna smile. They’re gonna have to go into their kitchen after they watch because they’re gonna need a snack, but they’re gonna smile.”
One part of the script she really enjoyed getting to put together was Blucas’ character name, Corey Turner. Instead of just throwing a random name in there, Provost shared that this name is actually a mash-up of some of her favorite baseball players.
“[Damian] lets me, because I’m a huge Dodger fan, a lot of our male characters are named after my favorite Dodgers,” she said. “His name is Corey Turner, the role that Marc Blucas plays, and he’s named after two of my favorite Dodgers — Corey Seager and Justin Turner.”
That aspect of “Season for Love” really gets Provost smiling, but one of the reasons she thinks viewers will be smiling so much is because “it’s a really cool love story” between old flames with delicious food as the backdrop. “The two leads, Autumn Reeser and Marc Blucas, are incredible in it,” she continued. “We’re so grateful that they’re a part of this film. They just knock it out of the park.”
Damian seconded her opinion, explaining that the Hallmark leads have great chemistry and the scenes they have together, alone, are the ones that will really stand out.
“I like the scenes where they start to go back to how they were when they dated in high school,” he said. “And the way that Autumn and [Marc] really bring those characters to life in those specific scenes, it’s just very genuine, and I think a lot of people can identify with…rekindling something with a relationship that’s always been in the back of your mind.”
When it comes to Provost’s favorite scenes from “Season for Love,” she really enjoys the moments when the two are cooking together in the restaurant. She said this is when the chemistry between the characters really starts to build and “watching them and the way that he looks at her, I think they just do beautiful work in this film.”
You can see Provost and Damian’s script, and the leads’ chemistry, come to life when “Season for Love” debuts on Saturday at 9 p.m. EDT on Hallmark Channel. If you find yourself wanting a second movie after watching it, let us leave you with this from Damian: “You’ll see at the end that there’s always room for a sequel.”
