‘Handmaid’s Tale’ and ‘Mrs. Maisel’ Already Won Their First Emmys Of 2019
Some Emmy winners are surprises, but based on past years, it seems like a guarantee that “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” will take home some trophies. They didn’t even have to wait until next week’s ceremony to score their first wins of 2019.
The Creative Arts Emmys were held in Los Angeles over the weekend, so several Emmys have already been announced. On Sunday, guest actors were awarded for their appearances, and “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” scored in the drama and comedy categories, respectively.
“The Handmaid’s Tale” actress Cherry Jones won for best guest actress in a drama. She plays Holly, June’s (Elisabeth Moss) mother, in flashbacks on the Hulu program. She was also nominated last year but lost to Samira Wiley, who plays Moira on “Handmaid’s Tale.”
It’s Jones’ second time winning the award. She also won in the same category for a role on “24” in 1999.
Bradley Whitford won for best guest actor in a drama. He plays Commander Lawrence, the complicated man who ends up helping June. This is Whitford’s third Emmy win. He previously won best guest actor in a comedy for his role on “Transparent” in 2016, and he won best supporting actor in a drama for his role on “The West Wing” in 2001.
The dystopian streaming show also won outstanding production design for a narrative contemporary program for the third year in a row, and “Handmaid’s Tale” could pick up two more Emmys this year. The best directing and writing for a drama series awards will be announced at the Sept. 22 Primetime Emmys ceremony.
Meanwhile, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” stars picked up both guest actor statues in the comedy categories at the Creative Arts Emmys. Jane Lynch won best guest actress in a comedy for her role as comedian Sophie Lennon. Lynch has four other Emmys, but this is her first in the guest actress category.
Unlike his fellow awards recipients, Luke Kirby is a first-time winner. The actor plays Lenny Bruce on the Amazon Prime show, and it scored him both his first Emmy nomination and win for best guest actor in a comedy. It is also Kirby’s first time winning a major acting award.
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” cleaned up at the Creative Arts Emmys. The comedy took home outstanding period costumes, music supervision, make-up for a single-camera series (non-prosthetic), hairstyling for a single-camera series and casting for a comedy series.
The show, created by “Gilmore Girls” mastermind Amy Sherman-Palladino, is up for seven others at the primary ceremony. It’s nominated for best comedy, lead actress in a comedy series (Rachel Brosnahan), supporting actor in a comedy series (Tony Shalhoub), supporting actress in a comedy series (Alex Borstein and Marin Hinkle) and directing (Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino for separate episodes).
The 71st annual Primetime Emmys will air live on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. EDT on Fox.
