‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 2 Spoilers: Everything We Know So Far
It’s been barely a week since the “Handmaid’s Tale” finale, and we’re already missing Hulu’s dystopian drama. Fans already know that the show was renewed for Season 2, so now it’s just a matter of waiting for next year. Luckily, showrunner Bruce Miller and star Elisabeth Moss have already let a few spoilers slip about “The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 2.
Atwood’s Involvement: Though the story is expanding beyond her book, author Margaret Atwood will still be helping the writers shape Offred’s (Elisabeth Moss) future. Showrunner Bruce Miller confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter that he is working with the creator while brainstorming ideas for “The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 2.
“Margaret and I talked a lot about Season 2, even at the beginning of Season 1 when I was talking to her and kind of getting a sense of what she thought of what I was doing, you inevitably have conversations about what might happen next,” Miller said. “They’re all tied together. So yes, we have had and continue to have extensive, deep and really fun discussions about what would happen in the future, what happens next.”

The Waterfords: Though Offred was taken away from her commander (Joseph Fiennes) and his wife Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski), they’ll still be involved in the story. “They’re still a part of our plans for Season 2 but in interesting ways,” Miller added. Though they’re going beyond the book, Miller added that the characters fans have come to know and hate aren’t going to disappear. “Certainly the people that we met and the situations we got into and the things that Margaret Atwood set up in Season 1 are not going away,” he added.
Mayday: Miller revealed that Mayday is the resistance, but they aren’t running an underground railroad for handmaids. They’re anti-Gilead, and saving the handmaids might not be on their to-do list. “If I was going to try to hurt Gilead, the first thing I might do is kill all the handmaids. You’re trying to weaken the state,” he explained to the New York Times.
Supporting Characters: While Season 1 spent a bit of time delving into supporting characters, it sounds like Season 2 will delve even further into the backgrounds of those involved with Offred. “Aunt Lydia [Ann Dowd] is one of my most fascinating characters,” Miller said. “We would like to explore her back story, and what the lives of the aunts are like. The networks between the Marthas. What is the commander doing all day long, and what is his life like? What are his responsibilities?”

Ofglen: One of those supporting characters could be Ofglen. Though we didn’t see Alexis Bledel’s character in the second half of Season 1, Miller wants the “Gilmore Girls” alum back for Season 2. “I love that character. Her performance was…I mean I can’t even express it in words,” Miller told Decider. “I was sitting on the set just crying at the monitor for ten hours. So yes, she’s hopefully going to come back next season.”
On June 22, Alexis Bledel was announced to be a series regular in Season 2.
Offred’s Journey: As previously reported, while other people might get their time to shine, the focus will remain on Offred in “The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 2. She’ll still be trying to survive. “Season 2 is what happens after you become a little rebellious,” Miller teased to Entertainment Weekly. “Does that make it harder to survive, does it make harder to live in a world where you can’t affect the changes you know should happen?”
Love Triangle: Elisabeth Moss teased that Offred’s marriage might not prevent her from developing feelings for someone else. Her affair with Nick likely won’t just disappear, especially considering she is apparently pregnant with his baby. “Honestly I think she does love Nick — if I can speak for her — but I don’t know if she knows that she does, yet,” Moss told Elle. “But she has a husband who she also loves, who’s the father of Hannah, who she also now knows is alive.”
Air Date: This is one thing we don’t know yet, but judging from other Hulu shows, it usually takes about a year for programs to return. Audiences will probably have to wait until next spring.
