Harley Quinn

During the 2019 Video Game Awards, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn “hijacked” the airwaves in typical supervillain style to give us a brand new TV spot for “Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn.”

Right before cutting to a commercial break, the lights turned off and Quinn’s iconic laugh can be heard. Purple and pink colors flash as symbols synonymous with Quinn begin appearing on the screen. Quinn announces that the Birds of Prey are hijacking the game awards, right before two popular streamers CouRage and Valkyrae pop up beside her ecstatically.

After disregarding them, the “Birds of Prey” TV spot plays.

The clip displayed more footage of the film that we haven’t seen before -- footage that showed off more character interaction, dialogue, and humor. The TV spot was a little less Harley Quinn centered and focused more on the other femme Fatales. Quinn was even seen standing in the back, behind the eponymous group of antiheroes while the likes of Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) took center stage.

Despite focusing on a few other characters, Screen Rant reports that the movie is still very much about Harley Quinn. Coming out of “Suicide Squad,” which was met with mostly negative reviews, DC has decided to focus much of their attention on Robbie’s critically praised portrayal of Harley Quinn.

Nevertheless, some of the highlights from the clip show the other heroines in action, revealing more of their dynamic and characters in the process. At one point, Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) chuckles that Huntress has rage issues. Huntress immediately blows up into a rage, denying that she has rage issues, causing Black Canary to laugh even more at her.

DC showing off their humorous side has led to some strides in what was once a struggling franchise when compared to the success that MArvel found with their own superhero franchise. The comedic takes began with “Shazam,” starring Zachary Levi, and are set to continue after DC hired “Guardians of the Galaxy” writer and director James Gunn to tackle “The Suicide Squad,” another movie starring Robbie that popular movie critic Scott Wampler has expressed is very funny.
