Harold Camping Explains 1998, 1994, 2011 Doomsday
Harold Camping admitted one mistake on his Family Radio program: he got the nature of the judgment wrong.
Camping said judgment did happen on May 21st, 2011, as he predicted. However, while he previously thought it would be a physical judgment of earthquakes and natural disasters, it was actually a spiritual judgment. The physical one will come on October 21st, 2011, he said.
He maintains that the 4 key End Times dates he preached all still stand - the only thing wrong is the nature of them.
May 21, 1988: He said the church and the world were both judged. Very few people were saved after this date.
September 7, 1994: He said the judgment on the world was lifted, so people in the world once again received salvation. The church, however, remained in judgment. The whole purpose of Camping's advertisements was to reach out to the world and save people during this period.
May 21, 2011: The world was put back in judgment. From now on, Camping implied that no one would be saved.
October 21, 2011: God would physically destroy the world.
During a Q&A session, one journalist confronted Camping with the fact that before May 21, 2011, he insisted the judgment was physical rather than spiritual.
Now, he has backpedaled.
Camping responded that students of the Bible learn something new every day and that he, like any other human being, is fallible.
