Voters chose Severus Snape as the greatest Harry Potter character, and an emotional Alan Rickman accepted his honor at Thursday'e premier of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Snape beat out 63 other characters in MTV's Harry Potter World Cup, demolishing Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger and even Harry himself en route to the fan favorite crown. He garnered 7.4 million votes along the way.

It's been such an extraordinarily complete character to play, Rickman told MTV. To go back...I don't know what the scenario would be. It's been so much about he appears to be one thing and then you find out a bit more about him as time goes on.

MTV set up March Madness-like brackets to record the results of the competition. Snape was a 2 seed, ultimately beating out Weasley who was one of four number 1 seeds.
