'Harry Potter' Star Robbie Coltrane's Cause Of Death Revealed
"Harry Potter" star Robbie Coltrane's cause of death has been determined. Medical records released a week after his passing reveal that the actor died of multiple organ failure.
Based on the records, Coltrane experienced lower respiratory infection, sepsis, and heart block prior to his death, causing his organs to fail. He also battled Type 2 diabetes for years.
The "James Bond" star died Oct. 14 at 72. His friend and agent, Belinda Wright, confirmed he died at a hospital near his home in Larbert, Scotland after being ill for the past two years. The cause of his death was not made public at the time.
Following his death announcement, tributes to the award-winning actor poured in on social media. Among the first to honor Coltrane was Daniel Radcliffe, who played the lead role in "Harry Potter."
"Robbie was one of the funniest people I've met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on the set," he recalled. "I've especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on 'Prisoner of Azkaban,' when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid's hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up. I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he's passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man," he added.
Emma Watson, another "Harry Potter" co-star, also took to Instagram to pay tribute to Coltrane. The British actress described the late actor as a "giant-hearted man" and "the most fun uncle I've ever had... He was deeply caring and compassionate towards me as a child and an adult. His talent was so immense that it made sense he played a giant—he could fill ANY space with his brilliance," she wrote.
Coltrane was best known for playing Hogwarts gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid in the "Harry Potter" series. He also played forensic psychologist Dr. Edward "Fitz" Coltrane in the murder series "Cracker," for which he won three BAFTA Best Actor awards. He was also nominated for the same award for his performance in the Channel 4 drama "National Treasure" and BBC series "Tutti Frutti."
Coltrane's movie credits include "Nuns on the Run," Ocean's 12," and "Mona Lisa."
