Harvard Apologizes For Updates On The Life Of The Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski's In Its Red Book
The Harvard Alumni Association apologized for an entry in the 50th anniversary report for the class of 1962 in which Ted Kaczynski, the man known as the Unabomber who is serving multiple life sentences, updated his awards and current job title.
The association did not necessary apologize for including an update to the life of the Unabomber in Harvard's Red Book, but publishing facetious remarks by listing his convictions as awards.
While all members of the class who submit entries are included, we regret publishing Kaczynski's references to his convictions and apologize for any distress that it may have caused others, said the statement from alumni associate communications director Joseph C. Raposo, reported the Boston Herald.
The apology was given on Wednesday night after one of Kaczynski's victims said that she was disappointed in Harvard, reported the Boston Globe.
Kaczynski is a con artist. He's a serial killer; he's a murderer, said Susan Mosser, the widow of Thomas Musser. Thomas was a 50-year-old advertising executive who was killed by the Unabomber in 1994 when a package exploded in his home in New Jersey, reported the Boston Globe. Susan Mosser said that allowing him to update his awards is part of his way of manipulation.
Everything is a game for him to push people's buttons, she said.
Many classmates sent in lengthy update on their lives for their peers to read. However, the Unabomber's only contained nine lines.
Kaczynski listed his occupation as prisoner, and under the awards section he said he had 8 life sentences. He also including his mailing address as No. 04475-046, US Penitentiary - Max, P.O. Box 8500, Florence, CO 8126-8500, reported Yahoo.
One of Kaczynski's former classmates said on Wednesday that they did not blame the University for including his update.
I don't fault them on that, said John Higginson, reported the Boston Globe. He believed that rather making Harvard look bad, the entry written by Kaczynski merely made himself look bad.
Kaczynski was once considered a mathematical genius as he earned his bachelor's degree from Harvard and received his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan.
Kaczynski later became a recluse, living in a cabin all alone in the woods. He adopted the persona of the Unabomber by send mail bombs through the US mail and led the FBI on 20 year chance. He ultimately killed three people from his bombs. He is currently serving a life sentence for his crimes.
